Elio's Lombardy, at a glance

Summer 1983: Elio, 17, falls in love with Oliver, an American student staying with his family in the countryside of northern Italy. Start in Crema, at the café tables in Piazza del Duomo facing the cathedral. The rest is in the countryside around the town, best done by car: Villa Albergoni in Moscazzano, the family's house in the film, the small lake where they swim, the hidden spring of their first kiss and the war memorial in Pandino, where Elio almost confesses, all within about 12 km of each other.

Keep a second day for the places further away. Sirmione, on Lake Garda, is about 70 km from Crema, with the Grotte di Catullo and the flat rocks of Spiaggia Giamaica a short walk apart. Bergamo Città Alta, where Elio and Oliver take a trip near the end of the film, is a separate outing. The station in Pizzighettone, where the farewell scene was shot, is about 15 km from the villa.

Villa Albergoni is private: you see it only from the gate. Swimming in the Laghetto dei Riflessi is now banned to protect nesting birds, and at Spiaggia Giamaica wear good shoes, as the rock is slippery.
