Mount Ngauruhoe
In the story · The Fellowship of the Ring (prologue); The Return of the King (Frodo and Sam climb Mount Doom)
This young volcano is Mount Doom, the mountain where the One Ring was made and the only place where it can be destroyed. The films use it in wide shots, finished with effects.

Where to stand for the photo
From State Highway 47 near the Mangatepopo Road turn-off, on a clear morning, frame the cone alone above the black lava fields: no long walk needed for this view.
Getting there
- Address: Tongariro National Park, State Highway 47
- Transport
- By car, about 4 hours from Auckland; shuttles run to the start of the Crossing.
- Access
- A short stop: the cone is seen from the roads around the park and from Whakapapa Village. The full Tongariro Alpine Crossing (about 19 km, 7 to 8 hours, check the weather) is a separate whole day. The summit is sacred to the local Māori tribe, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, who ask walkers not to climb it.
