The stops
1Around Queenstown
About these stops
Around Queenstown, the river crossing where Arwen races the Black Riders, the gorge of the elven boats on State Highway 6, and the slopes of Rohan's refugees. The slopes are a private farm reached by car with a paid entry code (about NZ$75 per car).
2Lake Wakatipu
About these stops
At the head of Lake Wakatipu, the road beyond Glenorchy leads into the golden wood of Lothlórien and the valley around Isengard; by the lake, the Ithilien of Sam's rabbit stew. The fields are private farmland; the lakeside is a conservation campsite.
3Edoras
About these stops
A lonely hill in the Canterbury high country, Edoras of the horse lords, with King Théoden's golden hall on top. The town was built and taken away: nothing is left, but the view is the same. About 1 hour there and back on foot, a long drive from Christchurch.
