Amélie's Paris, at a glance

Most of Amélie fits in one walk around Montmartre. Start at Café des Deux Moulins on rue Lepic, where she works as a waitress, walk five minutes to the grocer's shop of Collignon, the nasty shopkeeper she teaches a lesson, then climb to Sacré-Cœur.

Two scenes take you down to the 10th arrondissement: Gare de l'Est, the station of the photo booth scenes, and the canal where she skips stones across the water. From Sacré-Cœur it's about 20 minutes on foot, all downhill.

Go early: Place du Tertre is almost empty around 7 am. Moulin Rouge! is set on the same hill.

  • Café des Deux Moulins

Amélie (Audrey Tautou), the shy young waitress at the heart of the film, works in this café on Rue Lepic, among regulars with small quirks of their own. It is still a neighbourhood café with its zinc bar, and crème brûlée, whose crust Amélie loves to crack with a spoon, is on the menu. The tobacco counter seen in the film is gone.

  • Sacré-Cœur Basilica

The white basilica where Amélie sends Nino on a treasure hunt via the photo booth. The steps below are where she first watches him.

Fewer crowds: Quieter early in the morning or in the evening.

    • Métro Anvers (L2)

  • Canal Saint-Martin (Stone Skipping Spot)

The quay where Amélie skips stones across the canal in the film's most quoted shot. Look for the stone steps descending toward water.

    • best golden hour
    • Métro Jacques Bonsergent (L5)
    Take me there
  • Gare de l'Est

The station of the photo booth scenes: the booths where Nino collects torn-up portraits are at the heart of the film's little mystery. The walk with the blind man is not here: it is in Montmartre, past the shops of Rue Lepic and up to the steps of Lamarck-Caulaincourt metro.

    • best midday
    • Métro Gare de l'Est (L4/L5/L7)
    Take me there
  • Place du Tertre

The artist-packed square just behind Sacré-Cœur where the film's Montmartre mood is most concentrated. Go at 7am to have it empty.

Fewer crowds: Quieter early in the morning and midweek, before the painters set up around 10 am.

    • best morning
    • Métro Abbesses (L12)
    Take me there
  • Rue Saint-Vincent

The film opens here: the narrator notes the exact second a bluebottle fly lands on this cobbled lane in Montmartre, the same moment that Amélie is conceived. Beside the hill's vineyard, it is one of the quietest corners of Montmartre, and many visitors walk right past it.

  • Lamarck-Caulaincourt Metro and Rue Lamarck

Amélie, the shy young waitress at the heart of the film, takes a blind man by the arm and rushes him past the shops of Rue Lepic, describing everything they pass at top speed, then leaves him at the top of the metro steps, dazzled. The station, with its double staircase built into the slope of Montmartre, is the one in the film. The shops she describes are on Rue Lepic, lower down the hill, not right at the steps.

  • Pont des Arts

After secretly returning a box of childhood treasures to its owner, Dominique Bretodeau, Amélie walks across this wooden footbridge toward the Louvre, overcome by a sudden wish to help everyone around her. The bridge links the Institut de France and the Louvre; the love padlocks were removed in 2015 and the railings now have glass panels.

  • Notre-Dame de Paris (parvis)

In the film's darkly comic prologue, young Amélie and her mother come out of Notre-Dame and a tourist from Quebec who has jumped from the tower lands on her mother, killing her. The square in front of the cathedral is where the scene was shot.

    • Métro Cité (L4)

  • Toys Palace (former Palace Video)

Nino, the young man Amélie falls for, works in this Pigalle sex shop, then called Palace Video. When Amélie comes to return the album of photo-booth portraits he lost, he isn't there, and a colleague tells her he has a second job at the Foire du Trône fair. The shop still trades, now as Toys Palace.

  • Le Verre à Pied

In this old wine bar on Rue Mouffetard, Amélie eavesdrops as Dominique Bretodeau tells how a mysterious stranger returned the box of keepsakes he hid as a boy, and how it has changed his outlook. Earlier she had lured him to a ringing phone box at the north end of the street, where it meets Rue Clovis, so that he would find the box.

  • La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle Metro

On a platform of Line 6 at this station, Amélie finds the posters Nino has put up to reach the stranger who returned his photo album: 'Où et quand?' ('Where and when?'). Line 6 runs above ground here, on a viaduct.

  • Studio 28

Amélie likes to go to the cinema on Friday nights and turn around in the dark to watch the faces of the audience. That scene was filmed here, in a small Montmartre cinema that opened in 1928 and still shows films today.

  • Piscine des Amiraux

In the opening portrait of Amélie's family, her father Raphaël climbs out of a swimming pool and tugs at his clinging trunks, one of his small dislikes. It was filmed in this public pool, built under an Art Deco block by the architect Henri Sauvage and opened in 1930.

Before you go: quick answers

Can I visit the café where Amélie works?
  • Yes.

  • Café des Deux Moulins, at 15 rue Lepic in Montmartre, is still a working café open to everyone: you can sit down for a coffee where she served tables.

  • The nearest metro stations are Blanche (line 2) and Abbesses (line 12).

Is Collignon's grocery shop real?
  • Yes: it is Au Marché de la Butte, on rue des Trois Frères, five minutes from the café.

  • It is still a real grocery where people work, so take your photo without blocking the door.

How long does the Amélie walk take?
  • The Montmartre places fit in one morning on foot, about 2 to 3 hours with stops: the café, the grocer's, Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre.

  • The hill is steep: the Montmartre funicular goes up to Sacré-Cœur with a normal metro ticket.

  • The canal and Gare de l'Est add about an hour.

When is the best time to go?
  • Early in the morning: around 7 am Place du Tertre is almost empty and the light on the steps is soft.

  • Sacré-Cœur basilica is free to enter.
