Emily's Paris, at a glance

Start where Emily lives: Place de l'Estrapade, a small square behind the Panthéon in the Latin Quarter, with the bakery she loves on the corner. Café de Flore in Saint-Germain, where she meets Thomas, a literature professor, is about 20 minutes away on foot. Around the corner, Emily ends things with her boyfriend on the phone in front of the Panthéon in episode 2, and the Luxembourg Gardens, where she goes running, are about 10 minutes away on foot. Just off the square, Café de la Nouvelle Mairie is where Emily and Mindy meet for brunch and gossip; it is closed at weekends.

In Paris, the rest is spread across the city: the Palais Royal arcades where she walks in slow motion, Pont Alexandre III where she interrupts the shooting of a perfume ad, the footbridge on Canal Saint-Martin where she has her heart-to-hearts. Give it two days, or one area per morning.

Later seasons also take Emily to Italy. In Rome her flat looks onto Piazza Mattei, close to the Theatre of Marcellus, and the series returns to the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Piazza Mincio. The Square Colosseum is in the EUR district, a metro ride south, and Ostia Antica is a half-day trip by train. In Venice the scenes are around the Hotel Danieli and on the Rio Marin. In the Plan section, choose Rome or Venice to plan that part on its own.

Emily's square is 100 metres from the room where the young Hemingway went to write: A Moveable Feast walks the same streets a century earlier.

  • Panthéon

In episode 2 Emily is on the phone in front of the Panthéon steps with Doug, her boyfriend back in Chicago, who was supposed to join her in Paris. Emily's running spot: season 1, episode 2 opens with her morning run through the Luxembourg Gardens, where she stops by one of the statues, before heading back to her flat. The Senate's garden, with its lawns, statues and the Luxembourg Palace, is about 10 minutes on foot from Emily's square.

    • Métro Palais Royal–Musée du Louvre (L1/L7)

  • Jardin du Palais Royal

The Palais-Royal garden is Emily's lunch spot near the office: on a lunch break in the first episode she meets Mindy here, a Chinese nanny who once dreamed of being a pop star. Later in the series Sylvie and Emily also come here for confidential lunchtime talks. Buren's striped columns are not in the garden: they stand in the cour d'honneur just south of it, a separate courtyard.

  • Place de Valois

A real Italian restaurant on Place de l'Estrapade that plays the restaurant of Gabriel, the chef who lives downstairs from Emily. In the show its name changes with the story: Les Deux Compères in season 1, Chez Lavaux in season 2, and later L'Esprit de Gigi.

    • best evening
    • Métro Cardinal Lemoine (L10)
    Take me there
  • Palais Garnier

Paris's 19th-century opera house. Emily comes here for a ballet night with Thomas, a professor she met at Café de Flore and has been dating; when he sneers at the show she walks away from him and, on the grand staircase, ends up talking with the fashion designer Pierre Cadault.

  • Lulu la Nantaise

In episode 6 Emily brings Thomas, the professor she is dating, on a double date with Gabriel and his girlfriend Camille. Gabriel calls it a great little tapas place in the 10th; in real life it is a Breton crêperie a few steps from Canal Saint-Martin, and it still serves galettes and cider.

  • Monnaie de Paris

In episode 10 the designer Pierre Cadault stages his fashion show outdoors, in front of the Monnaie de Paris. The 18th-century building on the Seine is the home of the French mint, and today also a museum about coins and the people who make them.

    • best afternoon
    • Métro Pont Neuf (L7)
    Take me there
  • Les Deux Stations

In episode 10, with Paris Fashion Week in full swing, Emily and Mindy go for drinks at this brasserie, crowded with fashion week visitors. It is a real neighbourhood brasserie on the western edge of the city, by Porte d'Auteuil, far from the other places of the series.

    • best evening
    • Métro Porte d'Auteuil (L10)
    Take me there
  • La Maison Rose

The small pink restaurant on a Montmartre corner. After a bad day at work, Emily's friend Mindy, a singer working as a nanny in Paris, takes her here for dinner.

Fewer crowds: Quieter early in the morning, before the photographers arrive.

    • best morning
    • Métro Lamarck–Caulaincourt (L12)
    Take me there
  • Place Dalida

In episode 5 Emily stages the photo shoot for the Hästens bed campaign on this little Montmartre square, a spot she found the night before on an evening out with her friend Mindy. It is at the other end of Rue de l'Abreuvoir from La Maison Rose, where three streets meet, with a bronze bust of the singer Dalida, who lived in the neighbourhood.

  • Café de la Nouvelle Mairie

The café just off Emily's square where she and Mindy meet for brunch and gossip. In episode 5 Emily tells Mindy here that she kissed Gabriel, her downstairs neighbour, moments before his girlfriend Camille comes to join them. It is still a neighbourhood café and wine bar today.

    • best morning
    • Métro Cardinal Lemoine (L10)

  • Hôtel Plaza Athénée

The palace hotel on Avenue Montaigne, known for its red awnings. In season 1 the American actress Brooklyn Clark stays here while Emily looks after her for a watch campaign; in season 4 the hotel's courtyard is dressed as a winter chalet for the agency's holiday party.

  • Château de Versailles

The palace's Hall of Mirrors is the setting of the season 2 finale: the fashion show of Grégory Elliot Dupree, a young designer, where the veteran designer Pierre Cadault makes a grand entrance.

Before you go: quick answers

Where is Emily's apartment in Paris?
How do I get there from London or from the airport?
  • The Eurostar from London St Pancras arrives at Paris Gare du Nord in about 2 hours 20 minutes.

  • From Gare du Nord, and from Charles de Gaulle airport, the RER B train goes straight to Luxembourg station, about 10 minutes on foot from Emily's square.

How many days do I need for the Emily in Paris locations?
  • Two days are enough for Paris: one for the Latin Quarter, Café de Flore and the Palais Royal, one for the bridges and the rest of the city.

  • Versailles is a half day by RER C train.

  • In the Plan section, Roseo turns the places into days, with times and distances.

Where should I stay to be close to Emily's places?
  • In the Latin Quarter or Saint-Germain: Emily's square, Café de Flore and the Seine are all within walking distance.

  • In the Book section, Roseo shows hotels near the places at the partner's own prices, with nothing added.

Can I eat where Emily eats?
  • Yes.

  • Café de Flore is open every day.

  • Terra Nera, Gabriel's restaurant in the series, is small: book ahead for dinner.

  • Le Grand Véfour in the Palais Royal is a historic, expensive restaurant that needs a booking well in advance.

Where are the Rome and Venice scenes?
  • From the end of season 4 Emily works in Rome: her flat is on Piazza Mattei, and she visits the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

  • Season 5 ends in Venice.

  • In the Plan section, choose Rome or Venice to plan each city on its own.
