The Hangover

A trilogy of comedies about four friends and the worst nights of their lives. In The Hangover (2009) they wake up in a wrecked Las Vegas suite with a tiger in the bathroom and no groom, and must retrace a night none of them remembers; in Part II (2011) it happens again in Bangkok before Stu's wedding in Thailand, and in Part III (2013) the trail of the gangster Mr. Chow leads back to Las Vegas. Directed by Todd Phillips, filmed in Las Vegas, the Nevada desert, Los Angeles, Bangkok and Krabi.

The Hangover, at a glance

The three Hangover films keep coming back to Caesars Palace: the friends check in and toast on its roof in the first film, and Mr. Chow jumps from a penthouse balcony in the third. Start there: the lobby and valet drive are real, and the four walk to the lift in the corridor of the Augustus Tower. The Bellagio is ten minutes away on foot, and Madame Tussauds at the Venetian has a copy of the wrecked suite.

The rest of Las Vegas needs a taxi or the Deuce bus. North of the Strip, the Bungalows Hostel once wore the fake front of the Best Little Chapel; downtown, Atomic Liquors and the Plaza, where Chow's parachute flight ends, are a short walk apart. At the south end of the Strip is the corner where Chow jumps out of the trunk. For Jean Dry Lake, about 40 minutes south, you need a car and water. The Riviera and the motel used for Jade's flat have been demolished.

The second film moves to Thailand. In Bangkok, have a sunset drink at the Sky Bar (dress smart), walk the Chinatown lane of Soi Phiphaksa 1, see the neon of Soi Cowboy at night, and keep most of a day for the monastery at Muang Boran. Stu's wedding resort, Phulay Bay, is near Krabi, a flight away.

  • Bellagio

In the first film, the shots of the four friends arriving on the Strip show the Bellagio and Paris Las Vegas, which face each other across the boulevard. In The Hangover Part III, the production took control of the Bellagio fountains for the scene in which Mr. Chow, a small-time gangster the friends keep running into, glides over the Strip under a parachute.

  • Caesars Palace

The hotel where the friends stay in the first film. The check-in and the valet drive were filmed here for real: at the valet stand, the morning after, they get back a police car instead of the Mercedes borrowed from the bride's father. The roof where they toast, and where they finally find Doug, the groom, is the real roof of the Forum Tower; the wrecked villa with the tiger was a studio set in Burbank, California. In The Hangover Part III, Mr. Chow jumps from a Caesars penthouse balcony and opens a parachute over the Strip.

  • Augustus Tower, Caesars Palace

The corridor and lift lobby on the 24th floor of this Caesars tower are real: here the four friends walk in slow motion toward the lift, dressed up for the big night. The room number in the film, 2452, is a real number at Caesars, but the room behind the door was built in a studio.

Stu, the dentist of the group, finds out that the night before he married Jade, a stripper, at the Best Little Chapel. That chapel never existed: the crew added a fake chapel front to the north side of this small hostel, then called Hostel Cat, and the interior was a studio set. The building is still here, but it looks like a hostel again.

The friends open the trunk of the car and out jumps Mr. Chow, a small-time gangster, completely naked; he attacks them and runs off. The scene was shot on an empty lot at this corner, with the Luxor hotel in the background.

  • Atomic Liquors

On East Fremont Street the friends' car is rammed outside this bar, and Mr. Chow catches up with them: he says he has their friend and wants back the money they took from him. Atomic Liquors is a real bar, one of the oldest in the city, holder of the city's first tavern licence.

  • Jean Dry Lake

In the desert outside town, the friends hand Mr. Chow the 80,000 dollars that Alan, the bride's odd brother, won at blackjack, in exchange for Doug. The man with the bag over his head turns out to be a different Doug. The scene was shot on this dry lake bed, also used in Martin Scorsese's Casino.

In The Hangover Part III, Mr. Chow escapes from Caesars Palace under a parachute and drifts over Las Vegas, with Stu chasing him through the traffic in a limousine. The flight ends with a crash in front of this downtown hotel at the head of Fremont Street. The Strip was closed on a Halloween night to film it.

Not a film location: this wax museum at the Venetian opened a Hangover area with a copy of the wrecked suite and the wedding chapel, wax figures of Alan, Phil (the group's leader, a schoolteacher) and Mike Tyson, the boxer whose tiger the friends took, plus a bar styled like the Caesars roof.
