The Odyssey

After the Trojan War, Odysseus, king of the Greek island of Ithaca, spends years trying to sail home, facing the one-eyed giant Polyphemus, the witch Circe, the Sirens and the sea monster Scylla. At home his wife Penelope holds off the men who want her and his throne, while their son Telemachus goes looking for him. Christopher Nolan directed it with Matt Damon, filming in Morocco, Greece, Scotland, Iceland and Sicily.

The Odyssey, at a glance

Christopher Nolan shot The Odyssey in real places across five countries, and most of them can be visited. Odysseus' journey begins in Morocco: the wooden horse lies on Essaouira Beach and Troy burns at Aït Benhaddou. His home, Ithaca, is far away in Sicily, at the Castello di Santa Caterina on Favignana, where only the outside of the palace was filmed.

Plan one country at a time. In Greece, Pylos is the base: Voidokilia Beach, Nestor's Cave above it and Methoni Castle are all within 20 minutes, while Acrocorinth is on the way from Athens. In Scotland, Culbin Forest is near Forres, and Findlater Castle with Sunnyside Beach is a coastal walk from Cullen. In Iceland, Hjörleifshöfði, the Underworld, is 15 minutes from Vík. In the Aeolian Islands, Pietra del Bagno, the Lipari sea stacks and Scoglio Spinazzola are seen from the sea, on a boat tour from Lipari.

Check before you go: Nestor's Cave can only be seen from outside, Methoni Castle has opening hours and a ticket, and the path up to Santa Caterina is steep. Book the Aeolian boat trips ahead in summer. The film's studio sets in Los Angeles and Malta cannot be visited and are not listed.

  • Essaouira Beach

A real filming location. The Greeks' giant wooden horse, which the film presents as an offering to Poseidon, god of the sea, lies stuck in the sand of this Atlantic beach until the Trojans drag it back to their city. Greek reports add that the beaches of Essaouira were also used for the start of Odysseus' voyage home.

  • Aït Benhaddou

A real filming location, and the first place the film was shot (February 2025). This fortified earthen village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, plays Troy: the production added about 60 temporary structures, including a temple of Athena and the city gates, and about 2,000 extras took part in the burning and sack of the city.

  • Tahanaout

A production location. This market town at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, south of Marrakech, was used for extra city scenes, according to travel guides citing Movie Locations. The exact streets, and which city of the story they play, have not been announced.
