Christopher Nolan shot The Odyssey in real places across five countries, and most of them can be visited. Odysseus' journey begins in Morocco: the wooden horse lies on Essaouira Beach and Troy burns at Aït Benhaddou. His home, Ithaca, is far away in Sicily, at the Castello di Santa Caterina on Favignana, where only the outside of the palace was filmed.
Plan one country at a time. In Greece, Pylos is the base: Voidokilia Beach, Nestor's Cave above it and Methoni Castle are all within 20 minutes, while Acrocorinth is on the way from Athens. In Scotland, Culbin Forest is near Forres, and Findlater Castle with Sunnyside Beach is a coastal walk from Cullen. In Iceland, Hjörleifshöfði, the Underworld, is 15 minutes from Vík. In the Aeolian Islands, Pietra del Bagno, the Lipari sea stacks and Scoglio Spinazzola are seen from the sea, on a boat tour from Lipari.
Check before you go: Nestor's Cave can only be seen from outside, Methoni Castle has opening hours and a ticket, and the path up to Santa Caterina is steep. Book the Aeolian boat trips ahead in summer. The film's studio sets in Los Angeles and Malta cannot be visited and are not listed.
