The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) is Anthony Minghella's film of Patricia Highsmith's novel: Matt Damon plays Tom Ripley, a young New Yorker sent to Italy to bring home Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law). Tom soon falls for Dickie's life. Dickie's village, Mongibello, does not exist: it was put together on two islands in the Bay of Naples. Start at Ischia Ponte, where Tom gets off the bus, then the Bagno Antonio beach and Dickie's house.
Procida is a short ferry ride away: Via San Rocco and Piazza dei Martiri look down on the harbour of Corricella. In Naples, the Teatro di San Carlo and the Galleria Principe di Napoli are a metro ride apart. In Rome, a day on foot covers Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Ponte Sant'Angelo, Piazza Mattei and the Capitoline Hill; Sanremo's jazz festival was filmed at Paradiso sul Mare in Anzio, an hour by train. In Venice, Marge arrives at Santa Lucia Station and meets Mr Greenleaf at Caffè Florian.
Ischia and Procida each fit in a day trip by ferry from Naples, but check the timetables, which change with the season. Dickie's house is private, and the Anzio casino is closed: both are seen from outside. The Martorana church in Palermo, which plays a Venetian church, is a separate trip by plane or night ferry.
