The Talented Mr. Ripley

In 1958 Tom Ripley, a young New Yorker who lies easily, is paid by a rich shipbuilder to bring his son Dickie Greenleaf home from Italy. On the Bay of Naples Tom falls for Dickie's carefree life and for Dickie himself, and his envy slowly turns dangerous. Anthony Minghella directed it with Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, filming on Ischia and Procida, in Naples, Rome, Venice and Palermo.

The Talented Mr. Ripley, at a glance

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) is Anthony Minghella's film of Patricia Highsmith's novel: Matt Damon plays Tom Ripley, a young New Yorker sent to Italy to bring home Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law). Tom soon falls for Dickie's life. Dickie's village, Mongibello, does not exist: it was put together on two islands in the Bay of Naples. Start at Ischia Ponte, where Tom gets off the bus, then the Bagno Antonio beach and Dickie's house.

Procida is a short ferry ride away: Via San Rocco and Piazza dei Martiri look down on the harbour of Corricella. In Naples, the Teatro di San Carlo and the Galleria Principe di Napoli are a metro ride apart. In Rome, a day on foot covers Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Ponte Sant'Angelo, Piazza Mattei and the Capitoline Hill; Sanremo's jazz festival was filmed at Paradiso sul Mare in Anzio, an hour by train. In Venice, Marge arrives at Santa Lucia Station and meets Mr Greenleaf at Caffè Florian.

Ischia and Procida each fit in a day trip by ferry from Naples, but check the timetables, which change with the season. Dickie's house is private, and the Anzio casino is closed: both are seen from outside. The Martorana church in Palermo, which plays a Venetian church, is a separate trip by plane or night ferry.

  • Ischia Ponte and the Aragonese Castle

A real filming location. The seafront square of Ischia Ponte, with the Aragonese Castle on its rock just offshore, is part of Mongibello, the invented village where Dickie Greenleaf lives: Tom Ripley gets off the bus here on his first day.

  • Bagno Antonio beach

A real filming location. On this beach between Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte, Tom first meets Dickie (Jude Law) and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow), pretending they were at Princeton together. The Aragonese Castle shows in the background.

  • Palazzo Malcovati (Dickie's house)

A real filming location. This 15th-century palace is the house of Dickie and Marge in Mongibello. On its terrace Tom clumsily drops Dickie's jazz records, and from there they watch the statue of the Madonna carried in the village festival.

  • Via San Rocco, Procida

A real filming location. Procida, the small island next to Ischia, is the other half of Mongibello. Dickie rides his scooter along this street above the fishing harbour of Corricella to meet Silvana, a local girl he is secretly seeing, while Tom watches from further down.

  • Piazza dei Martiri, Procida

A real filming location. This square at the top of Via San Rocco, by the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is Mongibello's main square: here Dickie refuses to go back to New York, and later Marge buys fruit from Silvana.

  • Teatro di San Carlo

A real filming location, standing in for an opera house in Rome. The red and gold hall of Naples' great opera house, one of the oldest in Europe, is where Tom, now living as Dickie, spends an evening at the opera.

  • Galleria Principe di Napoli

A real filming location. In this 19th-century arcade with its glass and iron roof, Dickie collects the allowance his father sends him, and he and Tom pick up and send their letters.

  • Martorana Church (Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio), Palermo

A real filming location, standing in for a church in Venice. Peter Smith-Kingsley, an English musician who becomes Tom's close friend late in the story, rehearses the Stabat Mater with a choir in this Arab-Norman church covered in golden mosaics.
