Inferno

Robert Langdon, the Harvard professor of The Da Vinci Code, wakes up in a Florence hospital with no memory of the last two days. With Sienna Brooks, a young doctor, he follows clues hidden in Dante's Inferno to stop a scientist's plan to spread a plague, from Florence to Venice and Istanbul. In 2016 Ron Howard made it into a film with Tom Hanks.

Dan Brown's Inferno, at a glance

Most of the book is one long day in Florence. At Porta Romana Langdon and Sienna find the police waiting, slip into the Boboli Gardens and run through the Vasari Corridor over Ponte Vecchio to Palazzo Vecchio, where Langdon hunts for a clue in a giant fresco. Today that route is not an open path: the corridor is visited only with a booked time slot, going in from the Uffizi and coming out in Boboli, the opposite way to the book, and Boboli and Palazzo Vecchio have their own tickets. From outside, Porta Romana, Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Vecchio are easy to link on foot.

Then come Dante's streets, all a few minutes apart: the Badia Fiorentina, where the book opens, the Casa di Dante museum, the little church of Santa Margherita de' Cerchi, where visitors leave letters for Beatrice, Dante's great love, and the Baptistery, where the stolen mask turns up.

Then the chase moves on: St Mark's in Venice is about 2 hours from Florence by train, while Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern are in Istanbul, a flight away. A few places come only from the 2016 film: the Istanbul University gate and two squares in Budapest, Fővám tér and Gutenberg tér, where the film shot scenes set in Italy. Each city is a trip of its own: in the Plan section, choose Florence, Venice, Istanbul or Budapest. Book the Vasari Corridor and the secret passages of Palazzo Vecchio ahead. Robert Langdon's adventure in Paris is The Da Vinci Code.

  • Badia Fiorentina

The book opens here. Chased through the streets of Florence, the scientist Bertrand Zobrist climbs the bell tower of this old abbey church and throws himself off. His plan drives the whole story. The 2016 film opens with the same fall from the same tower.

  • Porta Romana

On the run, Langdon and Sienna try to reach the old city, but the police are waiting at Porta Romana, the medieval gate in the southern walls. They slip into the art school next to the gate and from its grounds into the Boboli Gardens.

  • Boboli Gardens (Buontalenti Grotto)

With a drone above them, Langdon and Sienna cross the Medici gardens behind Palazzo Pitti and hide near the Grotta del Buontalenti, the strange artificial cave by the gardens' exit. Next to it is a door into the Vasari Corridor. The film shot the chase in these gardens.

    • best morning

  • Vasari Corridor (Ponte Vecchio)

The covered passage the Medici built so they could walk from Palazzo Pitti to Palazzo Vecchio without going into the street. With the gardens blocked by the police, Langdon and Sienna run through it, above the shops of Ponte Vecchio and through the Uffizi. From the bridge you see its row of small windows over the shops. The film shot here too.

  • Palazzo Vecchio

In the huge Salone dei Cinquecento, Langdon searches Vasari's battle fresco for two tiny words, "cerca trova" (seek and you shall find). In the museum he learns that Dante's death mask has been stolen, and the escape goes over the wooden walkways in the attic above the hall's ceiling. The film shot in the hall.

  • Casa di Dante Museum

Looking for a copy of the Divine Comedy to read the next clue, Langdon and Sienna come to this small museum in the street where Dante's family lived. The tower house you see was rebuilt in the early 1900s.

  • Santa Margherita de' Cerchi

Known as Dante's church: tradition says Dante married here, and the Portinari family, the family of Beatrice, the woman he loved all his life, had its tomb here. Langdon comes here following the clues. Visitors still leave letters for Beatrice in a basket by the tomb.

  • Florence Baptistery

Dante was baptised here and called it "my beautiful San Giovanni". In the Baptistery Langdon finds the stolen death mask, hidden in the baptismal font, with a riddle written on the back that sends the story to Venice. In the film, the scene is set at the Baptistery and its bronze Gates of Paradise.

  • Piazza della Signoria

The square in front of Palazzo Vecchio, the old town hall. In the 2016 film, the opening chase of Bertrand Zobrist, the scientist whose plan to spread a plague drives the story, runs through it, and Tom Hanks shot outdoor scenes near the palace in May 2015. In the book the square is the doorstep of the palace, where Langdon's search goes on inside.

Before you go: quick answers

Can I walk through the Vasari Corridor like Robert Langdon?
  • Yes.

  • The Vasari Corridor reopened in December 2024 and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday in small groups, booked ahead with an Uffizi ticket and a supplement.

  • The route is one way, about 750 metres from the Uffizi over Ponte Vecchio to the Boboli Gardens: the opposite direction of Langdon's escape.

Can I see the secret passages of Palazzo Vecchio?
  • Yes, on the guided "secret passages" tour of Palazzo Vecchio, booked with the museum: it takes you to small hidden rooms and above the ceiling of the great hall, where the book's chase happens.

  • Dante's death mask, at the heart of the plot, is on display inside.

How long do I need in Florence?
  • The whole Florence part is a walk: from Porta Romana to the Baptistery it's under an hour on foot without stops.

  • One full day is enough if you book the corridor and the secret passages; give it two to see the Uffizi without rushing.

How do I get to Venice and Istanbul?
  • Venice is about 2 hours from Florence by high-speed train, arriving at Santa Lucia station on the Grand Canal, like Langdon; St Mark's is a 30-minute walk or a vaporetto ride away.

  • Istanbul, with Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern, is a flight away: plan it as a separate trip.
