Mamma Mia!

Two musical comedies built on ABBA songs and set on Kalokairi, an imaginary Greek island. In Mamma Mia! (2008), Sophie, about to marry, secretly invites three men from her mother Donna's past, hoping to find out which one is her father. In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), Sophie reopens Donna's hotel while flashbacks show the young Donna arriving on the island in 1979. With Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Lily James; the first film was shot on Skopelos, Skiathos and the Pelion coast in Greece, the second on the Croatian island of Vis.

Mamma Mia!, at a glance

The two Mamma Mia! films are set on Kalokairi, an imaginary Greek island, but you can visit the real ones. The first film (2008) was shot on Skopelos, and its symbol is Agios Ioannis Kastri, the chapel on the rock where Sophie's wedding takes place. The second, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), moved to the Croatian island of Vis, which plays Kalokairi when the young Donna arrives in 1979.

In Greece, stay in Skopelos town and fly to Skiathos, home of the old port where the fathers miss the ferry. On Skopelos, Kastani Beach, Glysteri Beach and Amarandos Cove fit into one day by car with the chapel. Damouchari, where 'Dancing Queen' ends, is on the Pelion coast of the mainland: a separate trip. In Croatia, take the ferry from Split to Vis town: the ferry harbour, the market square and St Jerome's Monastery are all on foot. Then cross the island to Komiža for the Jastožera taverna, and keep a day for the beaches of Srebrna, Stiniva and Barjoška Bay.

Check before you go: the chapel sits at the top of about 200 steep steps, the jetties and beach bars of both films have been taken down, and neither the Villa Donna nor the Bella Donna hotel ever existed (they were studio sets and computer images). Stiniva and Barjoška are easiest by boat, and ferries to both islands are busy in July and August.

  • Agios Ioannis chapel (the wedding chapel)

Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who grew up on the island with her mother Donna (Meryl Streep), is to marry her fiancé Sky in the small white chapel on top of this rock. The whole island climbs up for the wedding, and here Sam (Pierce Brosnan), one of Sophie's three possible fathers, finally asks Donna to marry him. A real filming location: the chapel was dressed up for the film, while its interior was a studio set in England. A brief view of it returns in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

  • Kastani Beach

Kalokairi's beach bar and wooden jetty stood on this sandy cove, built for the film and later taken down. Here Tanya (Christine Baranski), one of Donna's two old friends, sings 'Does Your Mother Know' to a young man who is chasing her, Sophie and Sky sing 'Lay All Your Love on Me', and Sky's friends rise from the waves for his stag party. A real filming location.

  • Glysteri Beach

The Villa Donna, the small hotel Donna runs on the island, was imagined on the headland above this bay; the building itself was a studio set. Here Sophie reads her mother's old diary to her two best friends, and after a sailing trip she and her three possible fathers jump from the rocks into the sea. A real filming location.

  • Amarandos Cove

A small cove with pine trees growing on a white rock. It appears while Sophie reads her mother's diary and pictures Donna's summers as a young woman, and during the sailing trip with her three possible fathers: the pines on the little headland can be recognised in the film. The island's tourism site also places here a picnic on the path to the Villa Donna. A real filming location.

  • Skiathos old harbour

To reach Kalokairi, the made-up island of the film, Harry (Colin Firth) and Sam, two of Sophie's possible fathers, arrive at this harbour in identical taxis and miss the ferry; Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), the third, offers them a ride on his sailing boat. The seafront shops were made to look older for the film. A real filming location.

  • Damouchari Harbour

Not on Skopelos but on the Pelion coast of mainland Greece. Donna welcomes her old friends Rosie and Tanya at the jetty here, and the women of the island end their 'Dancing Queen' run along the shore by jumping off it into the sea. The wooden jetty was built for the film and later removed. A real filming location, standing in for Kalokairi.
