Gil's Paris, at a glance

Gil is an American writer who, every night at midnight, is carried back to the Paris of the 1920s. Start where it happens: the steps of Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in the Latin Quarter, where an old Peugeot picks him up. Shakespeare and Company, the bookshop where he buys the memoir that drives the plot, is about 10 minutes away on foot.

In Paris, the rest is further west, along the Seine: Monet's Water Lilies at the Orangerie, Pont Alexandre III from the rainy opening images and Le Bristol, the hotel of Gil and his fiancée Inez, are 10 to 15 minutes apart. The Rodin garden, where Inez's know-it-all friend is corrected by the museum guide, is about 15 minutes from the bridge. One day is enough: the Latin Quarter in the morning, the museums and the bridge in the afternoon.

Le Bristol only appears in brief shots of its facade, so seeing it from the street is enough. The church steps are unchanged: come back at night to see them as in the film. Hemingway is one of the people Gil meets, and his room on rue Descartes from A Moveable Feast is a few minutes from the church.

The garden where Paul, Inez's know-it-all friend, lectures on Rodin and gets corrected by the museum guide, one of the film's funniest setups.

Gil and Inez's hotel, a Parisian palace hotel playing itself. The ornate facade is recognizable in brief establishing shots.

  • Monet's House and Gardens, Giverny

The film opens here: Gil Pender, an American screenwriter who dreams of 1920s Paris, stands with his fiancée Inez by the water-lily pond and footbridge of Claude Monet's garden, already lost in his romantic idea of France. The house and gardens where Monet lived and painted are open to visitors.

    • best morning
    Take me there
  • Château de Versailles

In the palace gardens, Paul, Inez's know-it-all friend, dismisses Gil's longing for the past as 'Golden Age thinking'. The palace returns near the end: the private detective hired by Inez's father to follow Gil takes a wrong turn in time and ends up lost in the 18th-century palace, chased by royal guards. Both the gardens and the interiors were filmed here.

  • Le Polidor

On Gil's first night in the 1920s, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald bring him to this old Left Bank bistro, where he sits down with Ernest Hemingway. Polidor's wood-panelled dining room needed little dressing to pass for the 1920s, and it is still a working restaurant.

    • Métro Odéon (L4/L10)

  • Le Grand Véfour

Gil and Inez have an awkward meal with her conservative parents in this historic restaurant under the arcades of the Palais-Royal, and run into Paul, Inez's pedantic old friend, and his wife Carol. The gilded 18th-century dining room appears as it is.

  • Deyrolle

One night in the past, Gil finds himself at a party among the stuffed animals of this old natural-history shop, where he meets the Surrealists and pitches a film idea to a puzzled Luis Buñuel. Deyrolle, with its rooms full of taxidermy, butterflies and shells upstairs, is still open.

    • Métro Rue du Bac (L12)

  • Musée des Arts Forains

The 1920s party where Gil joins his new friends among old merry-go-rounds and fairground rides was filmed in this private museum of fairground art, set in the former wine warehouses of Bercy. It is also where Gil confronts Hemingway.

  • Marché Paul Bert

At the Saint-Ouen flea market, just north of Paris, Gil meets Gabrielle, a young antiques dealer who sells him a Cole Porter record and shares his love of the 1920s. Location guides place the scene in Marché Paul Bert, one of the market's antique sections.

  • Maxim's

A horse-drawn carriage carries Gil and Adriana, a 1920s Parisienne he has fallen for, even further back in time to the Belle Époque, and they step into Maxim's, the Art Nouveau restaurant that was the height of fashion around 1900. Adriana is enchanted and wants to stay in that era.

    • best evening
    • Métro Concorde (L1/L8/L12)

  • Hôtel Le Meurice

Gil, Inez and her friends Paul and Carol go to a wine tasting on the rooftop terrace of this palace hotel facing the Tuileries garden, with the roofs of Paris all around. Paul holds forth on wine while Gil itches to get back to his walks.

    • best afternoon
    • Métro Tuileries (L1)
    Take me there
  • Square Jean-XXIII

In this garden behind Notre-Dame, Gil asks a museum guide (played by Carla Bruni) to translate a diary he found at a bookstall: it was written by Adriana, the 1920s woman he has fallen for, and it says she dreamt of him. The cathedral's apse rises behind them.

    • best morning
    • Métro Cité (L4)
    Take me there
  • Place Dauphine

Gil and Adriana walk through this quiet triangular square on the Île de la Cité and sit outside Restaurant Paul, at number 15, when a horse-drawn carriage pulls up and takes them back to the Belle Époque.

    • best night
    • Métro Pont Neuf (L7)
    Take me there
  • Quai de Bourbon

The vintage Peugeot that picks Gil up at midnight drops him at a party in a grand house on this Île Saint-Louis quay, his first stop in the 1920s. There he meets F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, with Cole Porter at the piano.

  • Chopard, Place Vendôme

A short scene: Inez and her mother look at rings in the jeweller's on the corner of Place Vendôme, chatting about diamonds and doubting that Gil is a reliable match. The octagonal square of luxury jewellers is just as it appears in the film.

Before you go: quick answers

Can I sit on Gil's steps at midnight?
  • Yes.

  • The steps of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont are a public street corner and look as they do in the film.

  • The church inside has its own opening hours, but the steps are there at any time.

Can I go up to the rooftop of Le Meurice?
  • The rooftop of Le Meurice is not a public terrace: you see the facade from Rue de Rivoli.

  • Ask the hotel about access, or book a room or a table there.

How do I add Giverny and Versailles?
  • Both are outside Paris and need a ticket.

  • Monet's garden at Giverny opens only part of the year, so check the dates.

  • Versailles is open most of the year but closed on some days.

  • In the Plan section Roseo puts each one on its own day.

How many days do I need?
  • Roseo's estimate: two days for the places in Paris, one for Versailles and one for Giverny.
