Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

A real filming location, and the heart of the film's romance. The villa plays Padmé's lake retreat on Naboo (domes were added to the roof by computer): Anakin and Padmé arrive here by boat, share their first kiss on the terrace, talk in the loggia about the nightmares Anakin has about his mother, and marry in secret on the terrace in the last scene of the film.

Access · A FAI (Italian National Trust) villa with paid entry, booked in advance; it opens at 10:00 on set days and part of the house is seen by guided tour. From Lenno it is about 1 km uphill on foot, partly on gravel, or a paid taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno; the path is not suited to pushchairs or reduced mobility. Check before you go.

A real filming location. On the meadows above the lake between Tremezzo and Griante, Anakin and Padmé have their picnic on Naboo, the scene where they grow closer and he rides one of the planet's big grazing creatures, which were added by computer.

Access · The fields are private farmland: look from the lane and do not walk on the grass. Check before you go.

A real filming location for a deleted scene. On the steps of this lakeside park in Tremezzo, the crew filmed Anakin and Padmé leaving for Tatooine, the desert planet where Anakin was born; the scene was cut from the film.

Not a filming location: it is where fans start. Anakin and Padmé reach the Naboo lake retreat by boat, and the boat taxis that take visitors to Villa del Balbianello leave from the Lenno lakefront, so you can arrive at the villa the same way they do.

A real filming location, standing in for the royal palace of Naboo. In the upper vestibule at the top of the grand staircase, Padmé meets Queen Jamillia, who now rules Naboo, and her advisers, who ask her to go into hiding. The palace had already played Naboo in The Phantom Menace.

A real filming location, standing in for Theed, the capital of Naboo. Anakin, Padmé and the droid R2-D2 arrive on Naboo and walk along this curved colonnade on their way to the royal palace.

A real filming location: the inside of the Lars homestead on Tatooine. In this underground Berber hotel, dug around open pits, Anakin meets his stepbrother Owen Lars, Owen's girlfriend Beru and Cliegg Lars, who tells him that Tusken Raiders, the desert people, have taken his mother Shmi. The same courtyard was Luke's home in the first Star Wars film.

A real filming location: the outside of the Lars homestead, the white dome on the salt flat. Anakin and Padmé land here, C-3PO (the droid Anakin built as a boy) greets them, Anakin speeds off on a speeder bike to find his mother, and later the family buries Shmi. The dome has been rebuilt several times, most recently in 2022.

Access · Open land in the desert, free, with no services. Go with a guide or a local driver. Check before you go.

A real filming location. This film set of Mos Espa, the desert town on Tatooine, was built for The Phantom Menace and used again: Anakin walks into the shop of Watto, the junk dealer who once owned him, to ask where his mother is.

Access · The set stands among the dunes and is visited on desert tours; parts of it are worn by the sand. Check before you go.
