The Lord of the Rings

In the peaceful Shire, the hobbit Frodo inherits a magic ring that the Dark Lord Sauron needs to rule the world. With eight companions he sets out to destroy it in the volcano where it was made. Peter Jackson filmed the three films (2001 to 2003) all over New Zealand.

Middle-earth in New Zealand, at a glance

The Lord of the Rings takes place in Middle-earth, a world invented by the writer J.R.R. Tolkien. Peter Jackson filmed it in more than a hundred places in New Zealand, from sheep farms to volcanoes. Start at the Hobbiton Movie Set, the village of the hobbits, which is still standing and open on guided tours. Many other places were empty landscapes: no set is left, but the view is the one you know from the films.

New Zealand is long, so plan one island at a time. On the North Island, Wellington is the base: Mount Victoria above the city, Rivendell in Kaitoke Regional Park and the Paths of the Dead at the Putangirua Pinnacles, with Mount Ngauruhoe, the real Mount Doom, on the way from Auckland. On the South Island, Queenstown is the base: the Arrow River in Arrowtown, the Kawarau Gorge and Paradise near Glenorchy are all within an hour, while Mount Sunday, the hill of Edoras, is a longer drive.

Check before you go: Hobbiton and the Pelennor Fields can only be visited on a tour, Deer Park Heights needs an entry code bought ahead, and mountain walks depend on the weather. You need a car for almost everything. Bilbo's adventure, sixty years earlier, has its own page: The Hobbit.

The Shire, home of Frodo and Bilbo: round doors in green hills, the Party Tree and the Green Dragon inn. The village built for the films was rebuilt to last for The Hobbit and is now open to visitors.

  • Mount Ngauruhoe

This young volcano is Mount Doom, the mountain where the One Ring was made and the only place where it can be destroyed. The films use it in wide shots, finished with effects.

    • best morning

  • Tawhai Falls

Gollum's pool: Faramir's men find Gollum catching a fish in the pool under this waterfall, and Frodo coaxes him out to save his life.

  • Mount Victoria

The woods where the hobbits hear "Get off the road!" and hide under the roots of a tree while a Black Rider sniffs for them. The pine forest on this hill above the city plays the woods near the Shire.

    • best morning

  • Wētā Cave

Not a film location: this is the workshop that made the armour, weapons, creatures and models for all six films. The Wētā Cave shop shows props and runs short tours of the workshop.

  • Kaitoke Regional Park

Rivendell, the valley home of the elves where Frodo recovers from his wound and the Fellowship of nine is formed. The buildings were sets removed after filming; a sign marks the spot.

  • Meads Wall (Whakapapa)

Emyn Muil, the maze of rocks where Frodo and Sam get lost on the way to Mordor and first catch Gollum, the creature who owned the Ring for centuries. The Whakapapa ski area around it was also used for the opening battle, where Isildur cuts the Ring from the hand of Sauron, the Dark Lord.

    • best morning

  • Mangawhero Falls

On the Mangawhero River just above these falls, Gollum, the creature guiding Frodo and Sam toward Mordor, catches a fish with his bare hands. Nearby, in a clearing, the two hobbits pass a ruined stone column. Some guides link Gollum's pool to Tawhai Falls instead, so both waterfalls carry the name.

  • Fernside (Featherston)

The gardens of this old estate appear twice. Its lake is where Sméagol and his cousin Déagol go fishing at the start of The Return of the King: Déagol finds the Ring in the mud, and Sméagol kills him for it and slowly becomes Gollum. The lake and its white bridge also appear in Lothlórien, the golden wood of the elf queen Galadriel.

  • Hutt River (Upper Hutt)

The River Anduin: after leaving Lothlórien, the Fellowship paddles its elven boats south down the great river. Some of the boat scenes were filmed on this stretch of the Hutt River, between Moonshine Bridge and Poets Park.

  • Queen Elizabeth Park

Some scenes of the battle of the Pelennor Fields, in front of the white city of Minas Tirith, were filmed in this coastal park, including the Nazgûl (the Ringwraiths on their flying beasts) and the mûmakil, giant elephant-like beasts. The main plain of the battle was filmed near Twizel, on the South Island.

  • Waitarere Forest

This pine forest near the coast played two woods: the Trollshaws, which the hobbits cross on the way to Rivendell, and the woods near Osgiliath, which Frodo, Sam and Gollum walk through after Faramir, the Gondor captain who held them prisoner, lets them go.

Before you go: quick answers

How do I visit Hobbiton?
  • Only on a guided tour, booked ahead: tours often sell out and walk-ins are rarely accepted.

  • Tours of the Hobbiton Movie Set leave from The Shire's Rest on Buckland Road near Matamata, or from the Matamata information centre.

  • The standard tour lasts about 2 hours 30 minutes; in 2026 an adult ticket costs about 130 New Zealand dollars.

How far is Hobbiton from Auckland and Rotorua?
  • About 2 hours by car from Auckland and about an hour from Rotorua.

  • If you don't drive, coach day tours leave from both cities.

Where is Mount Doom, and can I climb it?
  • Mount Doom is Mount Ngauruhoe, in Tongariro National Park.

  • The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a long day walk, passes right below it, but local Māori ask visitors not to climb to the sacred summit.

  • The weather changes fast: check the forecast before you set out.

How many days do I need for the Lord of the Rings locations?
  • Plan one island at a time.

  • On the North Island, Auckland, Hobbiton, Tongariro and Wellington take about 5 days.

  • On the South Island, 4 days from Queenstown cover the lakes and gorges, more for Mount Sunday.

  • Both islands need at least two weeks, and a car for almost everything.
