Remy's Paris, at a glance

Ratatouille is animated, so nothing here was filmed: these are the real places Pixar drew on for the story of Remy, a rat who dreams of being a chef. Start on the Left Bank at La Tour d'Argent, the restaurant that inspired Gusteau's, the restaurant in the film. Less than 10 minutes away is the Pont au Double, beside Notre-Dame: according to Sortir à Paris, this is where Remy and the young cook Linguini agree to work together.

The market street of Rue Mouffetard is about 15 minutes from La Tour d'Argent. Keep a second day for the Right Bank and the west: the shop window full of stuffed rats at Aurouze, near Châtelet, is about 10 minutes from the Pont des Arts seen in the opening images, while Place de la Concorde, Pont Alexandre III and the sewer museum at Pont de l'Alma are 10 to 15 minutes apart.

Le Train Bleu, the station restaurant at Gare de Lyon that helped inspire Gusteau's dining room, is on its own, so go by metro. At the Pont au Double, stand on the Quai de Montebello under the bridge: the stairs and the cathedral towers line up as in the film. The same bridge also appears in Charade.

  • Rue Mouffetard Market

The classic market street that inspired the film's Paris grocery scenes, with cheese shops and vegetable stalls still thriving.

  • Notre-Dame de Paris (exterior)

The cathedral anchors the film's Paris skyline and appears in several wide establishing shots.

    • best golden hour
    • Métro Cité (L4)
    Take me there
  • Place de la Concorde

The grand Paris square seen in the film's skyline sequences: the obelisk, the fountains and a sense of monumental calm.

    • best golden hour
    • Métro Concorde (L1/L8/L12)
    Take me there
  • Aurouze (rat-catcher's shop window)

On a stormy night Remy's father Django shows him a shop window full of dead rats hanging in traps: 'This is what happens when a rat gets a little too comfortable around humans.' Pixar drew it from this real pest-control shop, open since 1872, whose window of stuffed rats has startled passers-by for a century.

    • best evening
    • Métro Châtelet (L1/L4/L7/L11/L14)
    Take me there
  • Musée des Égouts de Paris

Remy is swept into Paris through the sewers and his whole colony later settles in the tunnels beneath the city. The sewer museum at Pont de l'Alma lets you walk a real stretch of the brick galleries that inspired the film's underground world.

    • best afternoon
    • Métro Alma–Marceau (L9)
    Take me there
  • Le Train Bleu (Gare de Lyon)

Gusteau's gilded dining room was composed from several Paris addresses, and this 1901 station brasserie, all frescoed ceilings, gold leaf and velvet banquettes, was one of the models the Pixar team drew on. Climb the double staircase from the concourse and you are inside the film's idea of grand French dining.

    • best evening
    • Métro Gare de Lyon (L1/L14)
    Take me there
  • Pont au Double

Sortir à Paris identifies this single-span bridge beside Notre-Dame as the spot where Linguini and Remy strike their pact, the young cook scrambling down the quayside stairs to fish the jar out of the Seine. Stand underneath on the Quai de Montebello and the stairs and the cathedral towers line up as in the film.

    • best early morning
    • Métro Saint-Michel (L4)
    Take me there
  • Pont Alexandre III

Among the real Paris bridges the animators reproduced with care, this gilded Belle Époque span is one Remy crosses on his wanderings, its winged horses and lamp standards rendered almost photographically. The view from its deck to the Invalides dome is the one the film borrows.

    • best golden hour
    • Métro Invalides (L8/L13)
    Take me there
  • Eiffel Tower

Remy, the rat who dreams of becoming a chef, is swept away from his family and through the sewers. When he climbs up onto a rooftop, he discovers he is in Paris, with the city spread out before him and the Eiffel Tower lit up in the distance. The tower is drawn, not filmed, but it is the real one and you can go up it.

Before you go: quick answers

Is Gusteau's a real restaurant?
  • No, but it has a real model: La Tour d'Argent, the old restaurant with the rooftop view of Notre-Dame, where Pixar's scouts dined.

  • The gilded dining room also drew on Le Train Bleu at Gare de Lyon.

  • Both need a booking.

Is the shop with the dead rats real?
  • Yes.

  • Aurouze, a pest-control shop open since 1872, still has its window of stuffed rats in traps.

  • It is a working shop: look from the street.

Can I visit the sewers where Remy arrives?
  • Yes, with a ticket: the Musée des Égouts at Pont de l'Alma lets you walk a real stretch of the tunnels.

  • Check the opening days before you go.

How many days do I need?
  • Roseo's estimate: one day covers the walk, with a second day for the sewers, the Eiffel Tower and a meal in one of the film's restaurants.
