Ripley

New York, 1961. Tom Ripley, a small-time con man, is paid by a rich shipbuilder to go to Italy and bring home his son, Dickie Greenleaf, who lives an idle life on the coast with his girlfriend Marge. Tom envies Dickie's world, and one lie leads to another, then to murder. Steven Zaillian wrote and directed the eight black and white episodes, with Andrew Scott as Ripley, filming in Atrani, Naples, Rome, Palermo and Venice.

Ripley, at a glance

Ripley is Steven Zaillian's black and white Netflix series (2024) based on Patricia Highsmith's novel: Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley, a small-time con man sent to Italy to bring home a rich man's son, Dickie Greenleaf. Tom is soon drawn into Dickie's life. Start in Atrani on the Amalfi Coast, Dickie's village: the bus leaves Tom below the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, and the little square and the beach are a few steps away.

Group the rest by city. In Naples, see Caravaggio at the Pio Monte della Misericordia and the chapel at Santa Maria la Nova that plays a Roman church. In Rome, walk from the Hotel Hassler above the Spanish Steps to San Luigi dei Francesi and Ponte Sant'Angelo, then the Borgia Steps in Monti; take a bus out to Porta San Sebastiano and the Parco degli Acquedotti. Sanremo was filmed at the pier in Anzio, a train ride from Rome. In Venice, St Mark's Square, the Hotel Danieli and Tom's Palazzo Contarini Polignac are all on the water.

Palermo is a separate trip: the Oratory of San Lorenzo is a flight or night ferry from Naples. Dickie's villa was filmed on Capri in a private house and is not listed. Churches and museums have their own hours, so check before you go, and the Venetian palazzo can only be seen from outside.

  • Piazza Umberto I, Atrani

A real filming location. Atrani, a tiny village on the Amalfi Coast, plays the seaside town where Dickie Greenleaf has settled: he is the rich young American that Tom Ripley, a small-time New York con man, has been paid to bring home. The little square appears in the series, and the village post office, where Tom and Dickie collect their mail, was a garage in the tunnel under the church of San Salvatore de' Birecto, right on the square.

  • Atrani Beach

A real filming location. This small beach below the village is where Dickie and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood, an American writing a book about the town, spend their days, and the series' beach scenes were filmed here. Tom finds them here soon after he arrives.

  • Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, Atrani

A real filming location. The old bus that carries Tom along the coast leaves him below this church, whose dome and bell tower stand on a rock over the sea. From there he has to climb a long flight of steps to reach Dickie's house, one of the best remembered images of the first episode.

  • Pio Monte della Misericordia

A real filming location. Dickie, who likes to think of himself as a painter, takes Tom into this small church in old Naples to see Caravaggio's The Seven Works of Mercy (1607), which still hangs on its altar. Caravaggio, the brilliant and violent Baroque painter, becomes Tom's obsession for the rest of the series.

  • Church of Santa Maria la Nova

A real filming location, standing in for a church in Rome. In Rome Tom goes to San Luigi dei Francesi to see Caravaggio's paintings of the life of Saint Matthew: the outside is the real Roman church, but the chapel was filmed here in Naples, so in the series the paintings are in a chapel on the right instead of the left.

    • best morning
    Take me there
  • Oratory of San Lorenzo, Palermo

A real filming location. In Palermo Tom visits this small oratory, covered in white stucco figures, to see Caravaggio's Nativity with Saints Francis and Lawrence, which in 1961 still hung over the altar. The real painting was stolen in October 1969 and has never been found: the series used a replica, and a copy hangs there today.
