The Jardin des Plantes was founded in 1635 as the royal garden of medicinal plants and opened to the public in 1640. It is the main site of the French National Museum of Natural History, by the Seine in the 5th arrondissement. Alongside the flower beds and old trees there are glasshouses, the Grand Gallery of Evolution and a small zoo, the Ménagerie, opened in 1794 and one of the oldest in the world. The garden itself is free; the galleries and the zoo have tickets.
