About Place des Vosges

The Place des Vosges, opened in 1612 as the Place Royale under Henri IV, is the oldest planned square in Paris. Thirty-six houses of red brick and pale stone, all with the same façade, frame a square garden of lawns, fountains and lime trees. Under the arcades there are cafés, galleries and shops. Victor Hugo lived at number 6, now the Maison de Victor Hugo museum, and the lanes of the Marais start all around.
